Hyperlane Introduces Universal Interoperability Framework for Blockchains

Hyperlane has emerged as a groundbreaking open interoperability framework, enabling seamless communication between any blockchain—whether Layer 1, rollup, app-chain, or VIRTUAL machine. The protocol, already operational across 140+ chains and five VMs, functions as universal infrastructure for cross-chain applications, asset transfers, and arbitrary messaging.

The system relies on Mailbox contracts deployed on each participating chain, which serve as endpoints for sending and receiving messages. When a message is dispatched, it’s inserted into a Merkle tree. Off-chain relayers then bundle the proof and deliver it to the destination chain’s Mailbox for verification and execution.

Security is architecturally modular through Interchain Security Modules (ISMs), allowing participants to select from default multisig configurations, prebuilt ISMs, or custom solutions tailored to specific risk parameters. This design puts security governance directly in users’ hands.
